Preventing mold growth. . .

Identify and control moisture problems by first finding the common sources of moisture:
  • Roof Leaks
  • Indoor Plumbing Leaks
  • Outdoor Drainage Problems
  • Damp Basements and Crawl Spaces
  • Steam from Bathrooms and Kitchens
  • Condensation on cool Surfaces
  • Humidifiers
  • Wet Clothes Drying Inside the House
  • Clothes Dryer Venting Indoors
  • Poor or Improper Ventilation of Heating and Cooking Appliances
  • Flooding

As we have mentioned before,  mold needs four things to grow:
Mold Spores, Mold Food, Appropriate Temperature and Moisture.

Since mold spores are everywhere, trying to control mold through eliminating spores is almost impossible.   Likewise, because almost any substance can be food for mold to grow on, trying to prevent it by eliminating organic substances is equally unlikely.  And because mold can grow in almost any temperature, controlling that is not the answer either.   So that leaves us with one variable that we have some control over - and that is moisture.

  Reduce Indoor Humidity:
  • Vent Bathrooms, dryers, etc. to outside
  • Use Air Conditioners and De-Humidifiers
  • Increase Ventilation
  • Use Exhaust Fan when cooking, dish washing and cleaning
  • Prevent Condensation on cold surfaces by increasing insulation
  • For Areas with constant moisture problems, do not install carpeting
